For only the second time, Microsoft has opted to go into open
court to defend its software pricing policies. In this antitrust class action,
the plaintiffs are alleging that Microsoft overcharged for its Windows, Word,
Excel and Office software. More specifically, the plaintiffs are alleging
Microsoft used its monopoly power to prevent cheaper alternatives from emerging.
The class consists of all Iowans who purchased Microsoft software since 1994.
Plaintiffs estimate that the lack of competition cost consumers $450 million.
Microsoft has settled similar cases by issuing vouchers. However, the plaintiff's lawyer has vowed that consumers should get their money back, not vouchers. For its part, Microsoft denies the allegations. Testimony is expected from Microsoft chairman Bill Gates and Microsoft CEO Steven Ballmer.
